Prevention and Restorative dentistry

In 21st Century today, our diets are easily saturated with sugary food and acidic drinks. Tooth structure is easily eroded through sugars and acidic drinks, and with a busy lifestyle, it is easy to neglect oral hygiene on a tiresome evening and a rushed morning. However, if this lifestyle is ongoing, your teeth will eventually decay, and in the long run, will require further more complex, and high risk dental treatments, such as Root Canal Therapy and Crowns/Bridges, may also be at risk of pain.

To prevent this from happening, when you come back in to Bondi Family Dental Surgery for your 6 monthly check up, and if we do discover some decay, or some easy tight spots for food and bacteria to get stuck in, we will encourage further treatment such as:

  • Fissure Sealants
    • Much like yourself, each and every one of your teeth have their own characteristics, called pits and fissures. Some may have deeper fissures than others, where food and bacteria can easily get comfortable in, and the spaces are just too tight for our tooth brush to get into. This is where Fissure Sealants come in, the name says it all. This is where we will seal off those deep fissures, to prevent bacteria from settling there, letting off waste products that will eventually decay the tooth. Instead Fissure Sealants will provide a smoother surface, where it is easy for water to rinse away and easy to brush.
  • Restorations
    • Restorations (or a filling) is the treatment required when there is active decay. The size of decay can vary on how early it is discovered. Where there is decay, there is bacteria eating away the surface of your tooth. Our job as your dentist, is to clean that bacteria and infected tooth structure out, and rebuild your tooth for its functional use in eating.
    • Now depending on how large and close to the nerves the cavity is, there may be local anaesthesia involved, to numb you up and reduce the experience of pain and sensitivity during the procedure.
    • Restorations are also futile, unless there is cooperation of the patient with diligent daily oral hygiene at home, to ensure that there is no recurrent decay.
